The Wrestler

April 27, 2009

I guess you Atomsplitters would figure I’d eventually watch The Wrestler at some point and I got a chance to watch it last night. The Wrestler, played by Mickey Rourke, is Randy The Ram Robinson (Ring Name) who was a huge draw in the 80’s sort of like a Hulk Hogan type character. As time goes on his celebrity fades out and he’s reduced to working small wrestling promotions on the weekend while working at a grocery store on the weekdays. Throughout the movie Darren Aronofsky does his usual thing of twisting your emotions over and over again before he finally breaks them in half. I definitely got choked up a time or two while watching The Wrestler. In the end The Wrestler is about a man who abused himself for twenty years or so because he loved to perform for the fans until the abuse caught up with him it broke him down to a shadow of the performer he once was. I’ve heard a lot of stories like this over time and documentaries like Beyond The Mat are filled them. This could be any wrestler’s story or actually anyone’s story who can only do what he loves to do even if that thing could destroy him in the end. If you’re a wrestling fan like I am or a fan of great movies in general you should definitely see The Wrestler.
