The Smurfs 50 Years Old!

January 30, 2008

The Smurfs are 50 years old this month. How is that possible you may be asking? It’s because the Surfs started out as a comic strip in a comics magazine in Belgium. Comic anthologies are popular in Europe. Two of the most popular are 2000 AD and Heavy Metal. Some very famous comic books and comic strips come from Europe like Lucky Luke, Tin Tin, and Asterix and Obelisk. Most of my favorite and influential artists are from Europe too, like Moebius and Hugo Pratt. There’s a long list of favorites, but those are the two most influential to me. So when you’re watching the Atomsplit cartoon know that a little of those guys are in there somewhere.
