Paradise Ghetto

December 25, 2007

What is a Paradise Ghetto? It’s a Nazi concentration camp. They Nazi’s called it Paradise Ghetto to make the Non-Jewish Germans think that the Jewish were being taken to lovely spas instead of death camps. In the particular camp I’m talking about 140,000 Jews were detained and some of those Jews were composers. Now a musician named Mark Ludwig is taking on a project to find pieces of music written by these composers while detained in the concentration camp. He’s found many scores that were tucked away and hidden or given to people for safe keeping, and most of the scores are unfinished. However he’s preserving the scores for posterity and performing what he can. This is just another example of how powerful music in particular and art in general can be, even in the worst of times.
